If you have a ViewLux window with a failed sash, fogged glass, or a crank mechanism that’s given out, we can match it and replace it without tearing apart your wall. Most ViewLux window replacements in San Antonio run between $450 and $1,150 per opening installed, depending on the series and whether it’s the full sash or just the glass unit. We stock common ViewLux replacement hardware on our trucks, so a technician can usually diagnose the issue and complete the swap the same visit. Homeowners typically find us after a window stops closing cleanly, develops condensation between the panes, or a crank starts grinding like it’s chewing on gravel.
Lightwell Windows San Antonio is an independent window and door company. We are not affiliated with ViewLux, but we know their product lines well enough to match a replacement part to your exact unit, series by series. Keith Yamada, our owner, has been working windows and doors across the Southwest for nearly two decades, and he keeps a notebook on every San Antonio job noting which windows face west. In this city, that afternoon sun will find a weak seal faster than anything else will.
Which ViewLux Models This Applies To
ViewLux builds a few distinct window families, and the replacement path depends on which one you have. The three series we see most often in San Antonio homes are the VLX 700 Series (aluminum-clad wood, common in newer construction), the VLX 400 Series (vinyl, mid-range, found in a lot of 2000s-era subdivisions), and the VLX 900 Series (their premium aluminum line, often used on larger picture windows and sliders). Identifying yours matters because glass thickness, sash dimensions, and hardware mounts differ between series. A 700 Series sash will not drop into a 400 Series frame, even if the rough opening measures the same.
The fastest way to identify your window: look for a small rectangular label on the inside of the sash, usually near the lock rail or on the hinge side. ViewLux etches a date code and series number there every time. If that label has faded or been painted over, measure the visible glass width and height to the nearest 1/8 inch, then check the corner hardware. On OEM ViewLux units, the hinge-mounted balance system uses a stamped four-digit part number on the metal shoe. Take a photo and text it to us, and we can usually confirm the series before we even run the appointment.
For ViewLux specifically, we recommend OEM glass and hardware whenever the window is under 12 years old and worth preserving. The aftermarket glass packs fit and seal fine, but the Low-E coatings sometimes have a slightly different tint than the original, which you will notice if the replacement sits next to an untouched window. For older ViewLux units (15+ years), a quality aftermarket insulated glass unit often makes more financial sense than paying OEM pricing on a window that is near the end of its service life anyway. We will show you both prices in writing before anything is ordered.

Signs Your ViewLux Window Replacement Is Failing
- Condensation or fog between the glass panes. The Low-E glass unit’s seal has failed, and San Antonio humidity is now inside the air gap. This is the single most common ViewLux failure in our market, and it never fixes itself. The glass unit needs replacing, though the frame and hardware may be perfectly fine.
- Crank mechanism spins without moving the sash, or feels like it’s binding. ViewLux casement hardware uses a small worm gear inside the operator body. Over time, the gear teeth strip, especially on west-facing windows where heat cyclically expands and contracts the metal. Replacing just the operator is a $60 to $140 part and a straightforward swap.
- Sash drops or will not stay open. On ViewLux hung windows, the block-and-tackle or constant-force balance system counterweights the sash. When a spring inside fails, the sash gets heavy and slams down. This is a tension component and should be handled by someone who does it for a living.
- Water staining or soft drywall under the window. The leak may be from a failed glazing bead or a compromised seal at the outer frame, not the glass itself. In San Antonio’s downpour season, a failed corner seal puts water into your wall cavity. This needs a technician to pull the sash and inspect the original flashing.
- Visible drafts even when the lock engages. Over years of San Antonio heat, vinyl tracks can warp slightly and weatherstripping compresses. Sometimes a replacement weatherstrip solves it. If the frame has shifted out of square, we may need to pull the sash and re-shim the operator mounts.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
| ViewLux Replacement Type | Installed Price Range (San Antonio) |
|---|---|
| Insulated glass unit only (IGU swap) | $250 – $460 per opening |
| Replacement sash (glass + frame, same series) | $450 – $780 per opening |
| Full insert window replacement (new frame, same opening) | $800 – $1,150 per opening |
| Hardware-only repair (crank operator, lock, balance) | $90 – $220 per window |
Those ranges reflect what we see in San Antonio across Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills, Stone Oak, and the King William area. The spread depends on glass size, whether the window is on a second story, and whether the original was installed with the OEM screen clips or an aftermarket track system. Every quote we write spells out parts and labor separately. There is no change-order surprise at the end; if we find a rotted rough opening once the sash is out, we stop and bring you photos before doing anything else. All replacement work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it is not right, we come back and make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
There is one thing you can safely check before calling: open the window halfway, and see if the failure is in the visible hardware or inside the frame. A broken crank handle or a loose lock is a simple fix for someone with a screwdriver and patience. Anything involving the balance system, the tensioned springs inside the frame, is not a handyman project. ViewLux hung windows use a tensioned shoe that can release fast enough to do real damage to fingers and hands. We say it plainly because we have seen it: that spring doesn’t care how handy you are.
For glass replacement, the practical line is this: if the window is on the first floor and the sash lifts out cleanly, a careful DIYer can order a glass pack and get it in. But you will want a second set of hands, and you will want to check the glazing bead profile before ordering anything. If the window is above a fence line, leaning a ladder against San Antonio stucco is how windows get replaced twice. Call (325) 420-4173 and we’ll send a technician who has done this a few thousand times. The estimate is free, and it comes in writing before anything gets touched.
FAQs
A ViewLux window in San Antonio’s climate typically lasts 12 to 18 years before the glass seal fails or the hardware wears out, with west-facing windows trending toward the shorter end of that range. The heat and UV load in this city is harder on insulated glass than almost anything else in the structure. A window that lasted 15 years in San Antonio has done its job; a window that fails in year 5 usually had a manufacturing or installation defect that we can identify for a warranty claim.
Call (325) 420-4173 and we will look at the date code on the glass and tell you honestly whether it failed early or simply had a good run.
No. Once the seal on an insulated glass unit has failed and moisture is inside the air gap, the glass has to come out. There is no reliable field repair that restores the Low-E function and the clarity of a failed IGU, and anyone who offers to “de-fog” the window is buying you a few months of clear glass at best. But the good news is that the frame and sash are usually fine, so you are paying for glass replacement, not whole-window replacement.
We will pull the sash, measure the glass opening, and give you a written quote before ordering. Call (325) 420-4173.
A glass-unit replacement on a ViewLux window takes about 45 to 90 minutes per opening if we have the unit in stock, and a full sash replacement runs 2 to 3 hours per window including trim and cleanup. The glass is often not in stock because it is cut to the series spec, so most glass replacements take 7 to 14 days from measurement to install. We will give you a date, show up on it, and leave your floors the way we found them, with a photo of the cleanup before the crew pulls out of the driveway.
We stock the most common ViewLux hardware items on our trucks: crank operators for the 400 and 700 Series, lock strikes, pivot shoes, and weatherstripping profiles. Glass units are ordered per job because the dimensions and tint codes vary by series and production year. If you also have PGT, CGI, or CWS windows in the same house, we keep parts for those on hand as well, so one visit often covers multiple windows from different manufacturers.
No. We write a fixed price before any work begins, and it covers the part, the labor, and the cleanup. The only reason a price would change is if we find hidden damage behind the sash, like a rotting rough opening or failed flashing, and in that case we stop and show you photos before doing anything further. You get a written price first, every time. Call (325) 420-4173 and we will measure and quote the job the same way.
We replace ViewLux windows in homes all over San Antonio, from bungalows near Alamo Heights to older homes along the King William Historic District, and we know this product as well as anyone carrying the line. A light well is what brings daylight deep into a building, and that is what a well-installed window should do for your home. If a ViewLux window in your house is not doing that anymore, we will figure out why and fix it, with a clear price before we start and a clean floor when we finish.
